Radium contamination of soil and water, a problem in many areas of the United States, can lead to health effects including bone and lung cancer. Researchers have developed an inexpensive and environmentally safe process for removing this and other radioactive substances from contaminated water. The process employs a kaolinite-based synthetic clay with a composition similar to natural mica but enhanced bonding properties that makes it not only excellent for remediation purposes but also promising for storage of radioactive wastes and recovery of valuable metals.
