Coal: Poised for a Comeback? Scott Fields Abstract For years new U.S. power facilities have spurned coal in favor of its cleaner-burning sibling, natural gas. But coal still accounts for over 50% of our annual electric generation. And with today's surge in fears over foreign oil dependence and the advent of technologies that make coal burning cleaner than ever, energy experts say coal is poised to play an even greater role in the United States. Environmentalists are wary, however, and say that even the cleaner new coal-fired power plants aren't clean enough.
