Abstract

Low vision and blindness are caused by a variety of disorders that can vary with age, gender, race, genetic background, and world region. Among the other environmental factors are ultraviolet light exposure, cigarette smoking, and diet. Scientists are beginning to identify genes associated with certain disorders, and international efforts are making headway in eliminating eye diseases such as trachoma and river blindness by ameliorating environment-related factors and exposures.
