| Arsenic: In Search of an Antidote to a Global Poison M. Nathaniel Mead Abstract
Arsenic has been known through the ages as the “king of poisons.” Today, it continues to be a bane to millions around the world who must deal with the serious health problems caused by chronic exposure to it, most often through contaminated drinking water. There also is growing evidence that arsenic may work with other cofactors to initiate disease. Scientists are working to find out how arsenic causes cancer and other diseases, why people with similar exposures may have different disease outcomes, and how arsenic may impact the young more severely than it does adults. Meanwhile, policy makers struggle to set regulatory standards that keep populations safe.
