Setting a Baseline for Biomonitoring Harvey Black Abstract A National Research Council report released in July 2006 acknowledged the contribution of biomonitoring to the assessment of exposures to substances including lead, mercury, and secondhand tobacco smoke, resulting in successful public health initiatives such as the removal of lead from gasoline and other exposure prevention strategies. The report noted, however, that challenges surround the use of this technology. Further, the design of biomonitoring studies needs to include more emphasis on communicating results, and there should be what the report called "a consistent rationale for selecting chemicals to be studied based on exposure and public health concerns."
