Monitoring Environmental Exposures: Now It's Personal Monitoring Environmental Exposures: Now It's Personal

Charles W. Schmidt

Abstract

Although a great deal of information has been gathered about the genetic component of various illnesses and disorders, much remains to be determined about how environmental exposures contribute to disease. Projects devoted to filling this information gap include the recently launched DHHS Genes and Environment Initiative. A central mission of this and other initiatives is to develop new exposure monitoring technologies to add to the arsenal of sensors and other tools that scientists already use. The data collected through these technologies could link environmental exposures to biomarkers that reflect a physiological response. As the field of personal exposure assessment progresses, however, practitioners must address difficult points around such issues as genetic privacy as well as how findings could translate into regulations.
