What EHP Publishes

EHP publishes a wide variety of article types. We have provided summaries of each below along with links to more information when applicable. We encourage authors to thoroughly review the requirements for each article type before submitting their manuscript for review.

Research Articles
Research articles report original research results that have direct relevance to the relationship between the environment and human health, and that make a substantial advance in the field.

Commentaries
These articles provide new perspectives on important environmental health topics and offer new solutions for environmental health problems. Commentaries that stem from discussions at workshops and other forums should acknowledge the meeting content and its purpose but should not be presented as a narrative summary of the meeting. This article type is not used to discuss individual articles published by EHP or elsewhere.

Reviews
Reviews collect, summarize, and evaluate previously published information and findings specific to a defined environmental health issue. EHP will consider a variety of review formats including state-of-the-science reviews (also called scoping reviews), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. However, the journal does not publish narrative reviews or reviews based on meetings (meeting summaries or reports).

Regardless of the specific objective, all review types must utilize transparent and systematic methodologies to identify the body of relevant scientific literature, including clearly defined search strategies and study eligibility criteria as needed to capture the current state of knowledge in an unbiased and comprehensive manner.

Consensus Statements
Consensus statements succinctly state the agreed-upon judgment and recommendations of an organized group of experts who are well versed on an environmental health topic of interest. Statements are developed by such groups after examination and discussion of the scientific data and evidence available at the time.

Editorials
Editorials are published only by invitation from the Editor-in-Chief. EHP uses editorials to comment upon scholarly publishing and journal practices and policies, and to provide important information and opinions about topics of broad interest to the environmental health community.

Errata
Errata are published to correct factual errors in a scientific article or news story that are identified after publication. Notify EHP of your intention to submit an erratum prior to submission.

Retractions
Retractions are published at the discretion of the EHP editors. EHP follows guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for issuing retractions, which may be requested by the authors or instituted by the editors. Contact EHP for inquiries regarding retractions.

In Memoriam
EHP publishes obituaries that recognize widely known individuals within the environmental health sciences. Contact EHP to request permission to submit an obituary and for guidance on content and length.
